America’s next top model

Automotive Technology

The automotive market in the USA has certainly been busy over the last year, and we’ve already seen quite a few 2021 models announced or released. So, picking which of the best cars of 2020 you should consider for purchase is no mean feat. Whether you’re after a coupe or a crossover, or perhaps a combination of the two, there is undoubtedly something out there perfect for you. And while many of the top choices out there come from across the pond, more than a few are produced right here in our backyard.

Supersize it

It’s hardly news that the compact car is all but dead in the US, with most manufacturers withdrawing their offerings completely in order to focus on more popular configurations, like SUVs, crossovers, or pickup trucks. But when it comes to big and rugged, we have mastered the formula. Almost all the best trucks on the market are locally sourced, with Ford dominating the working class segment. If you can afford them, the F-350 or F-450 are prime choices of a capable worker that still looks great on the road (or off it). But, if your wallet is a little too light already, the F-150 or its Raptor variant are just as handsome. Chevy also has its finger in the pie with the Colorado, while a variety of GMC or Ram models nip at Ford’s heels.

Top American Trucks include:

  • Ford F-Series
  • Chevrolet Colorado
  • Ram 1500
  • GMC Canyon

If you’d rather have something a little more family friendly, but just as big and powerful, the Cadillac Escalade reigns over the SUV segment. Of course, it is also absurdly expensive, since it comes with an almost nuclear powertrain and every piece of tech imaginable. Lincoln also has a few worthy mentions like the Aviator and Navigator, while Ford tries to be the more affordable option with its Expedition or Escape.

City living done right

While larger vehicles may be the flavor of the week, they aren’t always at home on the busy streets of more metropolitan areas. And though many of us would sooner die than be seen behind the wheel of a hatchback, there are plenty of sedans and coupes available to scratch your itch. Even the more performance-biased models will beat out the hefty SUVs and pickups in terms of fuel economy, but many of the more popular choices like the Dodge Challenger or Ford Mustang deliver subpar gas mileage figures. But then, who really cares when they look so good and drive even better?

Top American Sedans include:

  • Dodge Charger/Challenger
  • Ford Mustang
  • Chevrolet Camaro
  • Tesla Model S

What’s more, most of these American beasts boast far more attractive pricing than their European counterparts. They’re usually a little sparse on features, but they make up for it with horsepower and fun, both in excess. You’ll generally find a naturally aspirated V6 under the hood, although some automakers have given in to the turbocharging trend, while others go in the opposite direction and stick a V8 in there. Regardless, these are some of the most enjoyable cars to own. Many lack back seats, so they aren’t ideal for families. But, you probably wouldn’t want the kids in the back when you’re hooning around downtown after dark, anyway.
